Postoperative Instructions for TMJ (Jaw Joint) Surgery
It is important to start moving the lower jaw immediately after surgery. Pain will be associated with movement. Use pain medication as needed. Range of motion exercise of the jaw is essential for a good outcome.
Take all medications as prescribed.
Keep appointments with physical therapist if such arrangements have been established.
Weakness of the eye brow on the operated side may persist for several days or weeks. Call our office if you notice dryness of the eye(s). Moisturizing eye drops may be needed if this occurs.
Keep skin incisions clean and lightly coated with Vaseline at all times. Please refer to the Suture Care Instructions sheet.
Do not apply any bandages or other materials unless otherwise instructed.
You may shower, but be careful not to let water hit the wounds directly. Apply a small amount of Vaseline to stitches to protect them from soaking prior to showering.
Soft foods and thick liquids are recommended for the first 1 to 2 weeks following surgery. You may advance your diet to harder foods as pain symptoms lessen. Please refer to the Post Surgical Liquid Diet brochure.
Call our office immediately if you notice fevers, drainage from incisions, severe pain or swelling.
Sometimes the after effects of surgery are quite minimal, so not all of the instructions may apply. Common sense will often dictate what you should do. However, when in doubt follow these guidelines or call our office for clarification.
