Suture Care Instructions

Supplies Needed:
Vaseline®
Cotton tip applicators (Q-tips, etc.)
3% hydrogen peroxide, fresh bottle

Suture Line Care:

Mix 2 tablespoons peroxide with 2 tablespoons tap water in a small container.

Use cotton tip applicators and peroxide solution to clean all blood and material from incisions. DO NOT leave any crusts or blood on stitched areas.

Please clean area thoroughly and keep wound lightly coated with Vaseline® at all times. Make certain you have done your best – failure to do so is the most frequent cause of complication (e.g. excessive scarring, wound infection and breakdown, etc.)

Do not allow any area to dry out or scab over.

Do not apply any bandages or other materials unless otherwise instructed.

You may shower, but be careful not to let water hit the wounds directly. Apply a small amount of Vaseline® to stitches to protect them from soaking prior to showering.

Sometimes the after effects of surgery are quite minimal, so not all of the instructions may apply. Common sense will often dictate what you should do. However, when in doubt follow these guidelines or call our office for clarification.
