DENTAL IMPLANTS | Surgical Instructions

Postoperative Instructions Following Placement of Dental Implant(s)

  1. Take all medications as prescribed.
  2. Do not smoke. Beverages containing alcohol should be avoided for the next week.
  3. Some discomfort and temporary swelling in the area of you implant is normal. Ice applied to the face for the first 24 hours can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Warm compresses are more effective after the first 24 hours. If possible, sleep with your head slightly elevated.
  4. Maintain good oral hygiene. You can brush and floss like usual except avoid the area(s) where the implant(s) were placed
  5. Eat soft food for the next 10-14 days. Avoid chewing in the area(s) where the implant(s) were placed.
  6. Do not wear your denture until allowed by the Doctor. Pressure from a denture may jeopardize a successful healing process for your implant.
  7. Avoid vigorous mouth rinsing or use of water picks.
  8. In some cases sutures are placed. They usually dissolve and fall out within 5-10 days.
Sometimes the after effects of surgery are quite minimal, so not all of the instructions may apply. Common sense will often dictate what you should do. However, when in doubt follow these guidelines or call our office for clarification.
